What makes a great warm activity?

Does it enage everyone?

Is it easy to learn?

Doese it provide the right level of change?

Can it be adapted for other levels or focus?

Is it easy to prepare?

Does it develop fluency of the Knows and activate the dos?

Other ideas for activities

  • Half and double it
  • Odd or Even numbers
  • factors
  • Place on the number line
Another good idea is if the answer is 12 what could the problem be.

Use these questions
  • a number more than...
  • a number less than...
  • a number between...
  • half of ...

Māori Langauge Course

Tēnā koutou i tō mahi i te akoranga.  Thank you all for your hard mahi this term.  Below is a brief outline of what we covered each week and some accompanying slides to aid in your learning.

If you have any questions or need something clarified I will be at mahi until the 18th December so feel free to email anything through.

Week one,
Whakahua practise, "are there three or two" - a, e, i, o, u
mud eye said quickly sounds like marae
inga the winga, sing a song for nga
cuddle, huddle muddle for rolling your r's

Week 2
Greetings and farewells, slides give you some options, remember to not take on too much at once and to introduce a new greeting once you've nailed one.

Week 3
Kei te pēhea koe? How are you?
Ko au - me
ko koe - you
ko ia - him/her (singular)

Week 4
Introducing te reo tohutohu or instructional language.
Whakahokia - put it back
Tīkina - go and grab, really locking in the difference between
Te - one thing
Ngā - more than one thing
Tō - your (singular)
Ō - your thing (plural)

Week 5
Homai and Hoatu, still using objects in the classroom (do you remember any of the actions we made up?) combining with te/ngā tō/ō
homai ngā pukapuka,
hoatu te pene rākau ki a Jimmy

Week 6
Recap on mihi and kōrero tuakiri, what is the difference between pepeha and mihi.  DIfferent reo for acknowledging mountain and river if you don't have a whakapapa connection to that land.

Week 7,
Expanding on kei te pēhea and adding a new tense marker or pūmahi.  Kei te present tense.  I - past tense? Also adding in locations
I pēhea te hui? - How was the hui?
Also remembering that the answer to a question will start with the words of the question, ie,
I pēhea te akoranga? - How was your lesson?
I pai te akoranga, - the lesson was good
Kei te pēhea te haerenga? - How is your journey?
Kei te roa te haerrenga, the journey is long!

As well as the karakia we practised each week and some kīwaha thrown in it's been a pretty busy and fulfilling term together e hoa mā.

Louise Demspsey Phonics

Make sure you have small group instruction.  You can do whole class but follow up in small group sessions.

Clusters instead of calling blends.

Stages

Stage 2 & 3

Free game you can use online.

Can use the first sound or even the last sound.

Stage 4

Make sure that kids know their vowels.  You can download this from the Yolanda Sorrel's site.

Full Circle Game

Stage 5

Make sure you slow down with this stage spend time on learning this.

Wa rule info

Ideas for teaching sounds.

Ideas to reinforce split digraphs. Make bake and change it to make.

Good rule to teach the children. Children really need to understand the vowels.  Rules are up on the youtube site.

This is an example of a full circle game. https://www.ictgames.com/

Stage 6

Nice idea to use poems to look for prefixs and suffixes.

Introduce root words to students as this can help them learn word meanings.

Wanaga 2021 Notes

Learner needs a purpose for reading.  They need to have an effective reading experience.  Knowing what you are learning to do and knowing what you need to do when reading.

Examples of some teachers examples.

Text Sets

Unified understanding so we need to show the students can learn from one text to another.  Couple of examples.

You don't plan for high order you won't get to it.  Purposeful about open ended questioning. It needs to be planned for.

Extended discussion is different from questioning.  It goes around the children not involving the teacher.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ADAY9AQm54

Students are invited to discuss and as the teacher you are letting them do the talking.

Students need to learn about how to have a discussion.

Useful slide to explain ideas.

Some examples about critical literacy.  Sharing ideas will help the group develop their understanding about what they are reading.

Transfer strategies have high effect size on students learning.

Transferring vocab knowledge.

Students believe that the errors that they make are helping to develop their understanding.

Just a reminder about some of the programs that students/teachers are using.

Awesome slide to share characteristics of capable visible learners.  Students need to know what they are doing and make adjustments to their learning.  This will allow them to learn. Students need to know when they need help and what they need to do when they need help.

Developing Local Curriculum

Very interesting PD about developing local curriculum. Will be an interesting exercise working through this.

Pause Breath Smile PD Teacher Only Day

What a wonderful day doing PD.  This was very explicit teaching to demonstrate this program.  It was wonderful how you can use it in your personal life to manage stress and life as well how you can support students to become more resilient as well as developing very helpful skills to support them with learning and life.

Observation Tool PLG

Very informative PD looking at the new Observation Tool that we are going to use in the class. Look forward to trying it out and seeing how it impacts the teaching and learning. From that workshop I had adpated the slides and made a quick check sheet to check in when you are planning.

DFI 7 - Media

Another busy day on the DFI.  Was great to see how drones are used within the school to share school events.
Using the Laptop might be a really good idea to film in class for other work.  Having videos and movies on our school site sharing our school would be amazing.

Asking for permission for songs and then sending them the movie so that you can use part of that song is a great idea.

Camera - Osmo Pocket (Gimble Camera)
DJR Spark
Parrot

Connected - The default is Visible

It is amazing to be part of this connected network.  The opportunity that this gives us as teachers and our learners is endless.

If you are all paddling in the same direction, you have greater power, you are more efficient.

To be connected you have to share.  The act of sharing creates connections.
Having a one stop shop where you can get PD for many different areas is such a great help for you.

I need to have a look at the slide that Dorothy did about growing your blog as am really interested in how I can grow my students blogs.

We need to also remember that these are just as important as the Learn Create Share.  We need every aspect to connect.  Empowering people is very important!

Put all the information of to the side of the slide or the Google Draw.  Amazing to put all the information that they might need.  I usually stick the stuff I don't need on the work for that week.

I am going to look at going back to planning on the slides so that I can stop planning in two places.

Time to Create

I have added a photo to my class site and linked the students individual blogs to it using a Google Draw.  I am going to take a better photo and make sure I have the whole class here.  But it looks so much better.  Tui Site

Put in zzz where you want to put the video in compose.  Then go to Html and click find "control f"and type zzz and insert embed code in that spot.  Change the true to false to loop your animation and start your animation.  I love this idea as you are now giving movement to your blogs that is making more movement in our blogs.
This has been such a great time learning about the code and how to make animation more animated!
Thanks Kent :)
